Chapter 1 :)

The nurses said I was ready to walk again. Two of the nurses, Abigail and Brooke, helped me out of bed. This is the first time I have been in a good mood in awhile. Ever since I found out my parents died and my sister, Kaitlyn, was still trying to be revived. The fire happened about a week ago. I finally got enough strength to walk. Brooke helped me up then left me with Abigail to go tend to some other patients. Abigail walked me around the infirmary. We passed my sisters bed. There were 5 or 6 life wizards gathered around tirelessly sending dryads and satyrs to try and revive her. It hurt too much to watch so I looked away and continued walking forward. A tear rolled down my cheek. Thinking about how my sister was all I had left, and she may not even survive. I would be alone.  Thinking about how all too true my thoughts were made me forget what I was doing.
“Nicole. Nicole?” Abigail was saying. We were standing in the middle of the hall.

“S-sorry, I have a lot on my mind lately.” I replied while continuing forward. Abigail’s deep green, understanding eyes sparkled.

she said quietly, “Anyone in your place would.”

“I think that’s enough walking for today.” Abigail said with a huge smile.

I nodded in agreement and we turned around and headed slowly back to my room. A few life wizards had sat down and a few more filled their place at Kaitlyn’s bedside.  I walked by pretending not to notice what we were passing. I did a silent prayer that she would survive. She was all I had left. I couldn’t lose her. We finally arrived at my bed and I was about to sit down when I noticed an opened book on my bed.
“Thanks Abigail I got it from here.” I said waving Abigail away.  She nodded understanding and walked out. I sat down on the edge of my bed and noticed a not on top of the book. I picked it up carefully to find writing on it. No handwriting I know. I read it and it said, “Read this page. I am hoping once you do you will understand why you need to.” It was signed love anonymous. Great. Just what I need. To take advice from a note from someone I don’t know. I reluctantly picked the book up, and held the page with my finger, and flipped to the front cover.
It was an old withered dark blue with brown swirl designs on it. Maroon lettering formed the words, “Prophecies of the Spiral.” Confused I flipped back to the page I was holding and it was entitled, “The Prophecy of Times.” I decided to read it.  It says, “The sky will fall, The ground will quake. A ratio of righteous and wicked will break. The land that separates, Will be what binds. To bring us, to our own demise.” I wonder what the prophecy means, and how I play a role in it. All if a sudden a doctor came running over to my bedside.
“Hello ma’am. Are you Nicole DaisySInger?” The doctor said.

He had tan skin and mesmerizing chocolate brown eyes. He would have been attractive if he was a little younger.
“Y-yes that’s me.” I managed to mumble.

“Come with my right away. Its about your sister Kaitlyn.” He said with complete seriousness. My eyes grew wide I placed the book back on my bed upside down on the page and got up.
“Wait, I just started walking again today.” I said realizing the problem.

The doctor snapped his finger and I suddenly felt like I could run a marathon without breaking a sweat. He hurried out of the room and I followed close behind.
“How did you do that?” I asked in complete amazement.

He ignored my question and led me to Kaitlyn’s bed. Life wizards anymore it was just a nurse cleaning up the table and Kaitlyn lying in her bed didn’t surround it. I almost burst out in tears. I thought she was dead but then I saw it. Her chest moved up and down. She’s breathing!
I tried to contain my excitement and the doctor shot me a smile before saying, “It took awhile but she’s almost fully healed. She can go home in 3 days. Speaking of which you can get released now. You can walk and your wounds are either sewed up or almost completely healed.”
I looked up at him with hope. I mouthed the words thank you and walked over to my sister and sat by her side. I reached for her hand and as I touched the back her eyes fluttered open to reveal her stunning grass colored eyes, just like mine.
“N-Nicole?” she said barely audible.

“Yea it’s me. How are you feeling?” I replied.

“ Okay I guess. Really weak. It hurts to breathe.” She said trying to smile.

“Here let me go get a doctor and see if they can help with the hurt to breathe thing.” I said with a smile as I slowly got up and walked up to the same doctor who showed me my sister. “Excuse me, my sister woke up and she is saying it hurts her to breathe. Is there anything you can do to help her?” I asked with concern.
“Here let me go see.” He said walking over to her bed. I followed close behind feeling guilty for leaving her alone.  “Well hello there Kaitlyn. Nice to see you awake finally.” He said with a huge smile.
“Hi.” She said with a smile. I tried not to giggle.

“What’s wrong, your sister said it hurts to breathe?” He said that like he was talking to a baby even though Kaitlyn was 9.
She shook her head yes and then asked, “Excuse me, but how long have I been out?” He snapped his fingers and her face looked relieved.
He then answered, “About a week now. Why?”

“Just wondering. Thanks, it’s a lot easier to breathe now.”

“Anytime.” He said flashing her another smile and leaving the room.

“Nicole?” she said.

 “Yes Kaitlyn?” I answered.

“Where’s mom and dad?” She asked.

Oh, no. The question I have been dreading, and hoping she wouldn’t ask.

“Um, about that,” I said while sitting down and grabbing her hand, “Well during all the chaos, our house kind of collapsed and they were caught in the rubble. They didn’t survive.”

Tears erupted out of her eye,“T-th-they d-di-didn’t m-ma-make i-it?”

I shook my head no. I out stretched my arms and sat on the edge of the bed. She leaned over to me and cried into my shoulder. We are all we have. I’m only 15 and now I need to care for Kaitlyn. After a few minutes I let go and she laid back.
“You should get some sleep. I am gonna go head to the headmaster’s house and see if I can get us a dorm to live in.” I said.
She shook her head yes and I waited till she closed her eyes and drifted off before leaving and heading to the front desk.
I walked up to the Secretary, “Hi, I’m Nicole DaisySinger, the doctor said I could get released.” The secretary looked through some books before replying, “It seems like you can. Have a nice day Ms. DaisySinger.”
“Thanks!” I said then swiftly turned around and walked out the infirmary doors. Now to the headmasters office.
